2023 Sustainability Report

For over half a decade, focus on people, care for our communities and environmental protection have been the mainstays of our sustainability path and have brought substance to our mission of sharing, with the entire all the goodness of bakery world, our commitment to product quality and rigorous food safety standards as well as social and environmental responsibility.

This commitment extends to all company departments and occupies a distinct place in the Morato Group agenda. It ensures that our growth will never come at the expense of our identity and values.

Today, the 4th edition of our Sustainability Report marks a milestone in our sustainability path.

For the first time, the report gathers the commitments of all the Group’s sites in Italy, Spain and France. We have reached this milestone by reinforcing the Sustainability Committee, a strategic pillar in the definition of shared objectives and in giving shape and substance to the concept of “sustainability”, making it a concrete, tangible commitment within everyone’s reach.

We are committed to creating a culture of sustainability at all levels, and because training is a powerful tool for engaging and energizing people, this commitment has translated into a host of training initiatives.

Between June 2023 and June 2024, we delivered over 800 hours of training to raise awareness and develop expertise in the various areas of sustainability, with a specific focus on what each of us can actually do. Through training, we aim to cultivate a company culture in which every employee feels that they play an active role in the change and can contribute with innovative ideas and sustainable solutions.

Here are some of the results:

  • Starting with innovation, which is a strong driving force for our Group, we invested over 3.7 million euros in research and development just in 2023, with the aim of creating new products and improving existing ones.  We have had many product launches in the healthy food sector, with a focus on people's wellbeing, responding to multiple needs and diets that are increasingly personalised.
  • Innovation has also influenced our packaging. We are completing the process of making all our packaging out of 100% recyclable materials, with a lower plastic content; we have set ourselves the goal of achieving this within the next 2 years.
  • We have launched an investment plan involving over 3 million euros, designated for the installation of photovoltaic systems over the next 2 years. This will allow us to reduce our impact in terms of CO2 emissions by 2,474 tonnes. The goal is to increase our current production of 3% of our energy needs from renewable sources, to 15% by 2026.
  • When it comes to training, just last year we provided over 5,000 hours of training (on top of all of our mandatory safety training courses), which involved all our department teams. We also strengthened our collaboration with CUOA Business School, and many secondary schools in the area.
  • We have supported numerous projects in the region to promote sport, a culture of prevention, and inclusion. Our partners include Telethon, the Fondazione Veronesi, Veronesi Foundation, Bambini delle Fate, AISM (Associazione Italiana Sclerosi Multipla, Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association), and the Banco Alimentare (Food Bank).
